IHRB: Advancing a Just Transition in the Built Environment

In 2024, Citieslab contributed to a global research initiative led by the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), aimed at exploring how decarbonisation efforts in the built environment can uphold human rights and promote spatial justice. Our team focused on Jakarta, one of eight spotlighted cities. In this project, Citieslab led the contextual analysis of urban policy through a human rights lens, with particular focus on the right to housing, construction labour conditions, and spatial equity.

Citieslab also contributed to drafting the city report and workshop documentation, translating local insights into actionable recommendations for public, private sector actors, civil society, and organisations. The report provides an overview of the national and local context, the human rights risks and opportunities found, and the factors that hinder or enable a just transition for workers and impacted communities in Jakarta’s built environment.
